Argentina’s Bicentennial

Argentina turned 200 years on May 25th 2010. In the last 2 centuries years Argentina grew and evolved in many areas, being internationally recognized not only because of its wonderful natural landscapes but also because of its history, tradition and culture.

FRANCISCO GAUSACHS - NANNY VERWEY (Mrs. Universe 1976) - MIGUEL DOURA (Argentinean Painter) - FREDERIK VAN DEN BERG (Dutch Artist) AND LINDA GAUSACHS

We would like to take the readers back in time to May 25, 1810, when in Buenos Aires the patriots decided to establish the first autonomous government council. This challenge to the colonial order was the first step to set in motion the process that would lead to the declaration of independence in 1816. On May 25 Argentina pays tribute to those patriots and heroes who founded our nation.

After the declaration of the independence in Argentina, the Netherlands was among the first countries to recognize it. The relationship between both countries began when the Dutch sailors Willem Schouten and Jacob Le Maire discovered the “Isla de los Estados” in 1616, but it was in the late nineteenth century that it started to grow.

Together with other European immigrants, large contingents of Dutch people arrived in the country, founding in 1884 the community of Tres Arroyos, which is still nowadays home of traditional and new Argentinian-Dutch families. With their work side by side with the locals, Dutch immigrants helped to create a modern Argentina.

people, are the result of a meeting of highly diverse cultures. The coexistence and integration of immigrants from all over the world has been a particular feature of Argentine’s history and will keep being. Argentina invites the people of the world to enjoy the celebration of its country’s 200th birthday and to share the best of what Argentina has to offer!
